Andrew’s Topic Show:
Giving care to those in dire need of help
Yesterday afternoon after I had all tedious work done, I could really relax myself for a short while. However, I would not like to idle my time away without doing anything useful. If so, I might feel bored out of my mind. So I tried my hand at translating a short passage from English into Chinese. Did I do it just for fun or for any inexplicable reason? Actually I really want to have it translated for my students. I would offer them some food for thought. As the New Year festival is just around the corner, we should ask ourselves whether we should show pity for those in dire poverty and need of help.
The little match girl was out in a snowstorm. Her feet were like ice cubes and her fingertips had frostbite.
She hadn't sold any matches since daybreak, and she had a stomachache from the hunger pangs, but her stepmother would beat her with a broomstick if she came home with an empty coin purse.
Looking into the bright living rooms, she saw Christmas trees and warm fireplaces. Out on the snowbank, she lit match and saw the image of a grand dinner table of food before her. As the matchstick burned, the illusion slowly faded. She lit another one and saw a room full of happy family members. On the last match, her grandmother came down and carried her home. In the morning, the passersby saw the little match girl. She had frozen during the nighttime, but she had a smile on her face.
（1） Do you often give a helping hand to people around you, particularly those poor people or handicapped?
（2） In what ways do you think we should try to give the poor or handicapped to earnestly bring them out of trouble or life bitterness?
（3） As the spring festival is approaching, do you think of someone who really needs your help? How can you help him or her?
