An ancient Hebrew text says,"Love is as strong as death." It seems that not everyone experiences this kind of strong love. Everyone needs love and the world needs true love. But what is true love?
True love is best seen as devotion and action, not an emotion. Love is not exclusively based on how we feel. Certainly our emotions are involved, but they cannot be our only criteria for love. True love is when you care enough about another person that you would lay down your life for them. When this happens, then love truly is "as strong as death."
How many of you have a mother or father, husband or wife, son or daughter or friend who would sacrifice his or her own life for yours? Those of you who truly love your spouse and children would unselfishly lay your life on the line to save them from death. Many people, in emergency rooms with their loved ones have prayed," Please God, take me instead of them."
Find true love, and be a true lover as well. May you find the love which is not only stronger than death but which leads to a truly fulfilling life.
The following are two true stories about true love.
Chang Jinming, a young man born in the 1980s, made a big decision to donate a part of his liver to save his mother’ s life.
As a boy, Chang was once a trouble maker, frequently skipping classes and ending up an addict to the Internet games. His mother spent numerous nights looking for him. With the motherly love and persistence, the mother succeeded in turning the problem boy into a straight man.
Three years ago, the mother came down with an acute icterus dysfunction, which turned into the later period of hepatocirrhosis. The only hope of her life relied on a liver transplant, or her life would end in two months. Without his mother’s knowledge, Chang had a matching test done at a hospital, and surprisingly the match was perfect.
Realizing her son’s idea, the mother put her foot down, and none of the family members approved, either, for fear of losing both lives. Determined to save his mother, Chang threatened to kill himself so that the liver could be removed from his body. The mother and the son held each other firmly, bursting into tears.
In April last year, the operation was successfully done. When about 55% of Chang’s liver was taken out, to their surprise, the doctors found there were two vein trunks on his liver while there is only one on a normal liver. Is it a God given gift for the caring mother and son?
Now the mother is in a good recovery and the son is taking care of his mother with care.
A pair of twin girls suffered from thalassemia major. To save her daughters, Tian Xiongfei, a woman form Guizhou Province, braving great risks, got pregnant and gave birth to a healthy boy some time ago in Guangzhou. With the umbilical cord blood of the boy, a marrow transplant operation will be done soon and the twin girls’ lives will be saved. The other day, Tian’s husband Song Yuanxiang, pushed a cart with a birthday cake on it into the ward, the wife was both surprised and overjoyed. Her birthday was supposed to be one day earlier, but she was delivering the boy that day, the birthday was delayed. Blowing out the candles, she made two wishes: babies grow up in good health and the family live together in happiness.
Life is full of thorns and pits and nobody is free from difficulties and setbacks. As long as there is love, however, life is sweet. Let’s have a heart of gratitude, thanking for everything that life gives us, be it sweet or bitter.
